Diwali is one of the most important festivals of Gujarat. While the rest of the country observes Diwali for two to five days, in Gujarat the celebrations can go up to nearly a week. Every other state has holidays either on the main day of Diwali or maybe a day after or before Diwali, but in Gujarat, it is five days of holidays with extensive festivities and celebrations. Different colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around their house.

The Diwali or Deepavali festival marks the victory of good over evil. The Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’ means  an array of lights and signifies the victory of brightness over darkness. The celebrations for Diwali in Maharashtra are a little different from the celebrations in the rest of the country.

    चिवडा-चकली, लाडू-करंजीची ही लज्जतच न्यारी,
    नव्यानवलाईची दिवाळी येता, आनंदली दुनिया सारी!
    दिवाळीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा!
  • दिवाळीची आली पहाट, रांगोळ्यांचा केला थाट
    अभ्यंगाला मांडले पाट, उटणी, अत्तरे घमघमाट
    लाडू, चकल्या कडबोळ्यांनी सजले ताट
    पणत्या दारांत एकशेसाठ, आकाश दिव्यांची झगमगाट!
    दिवाळीच्या लक्ष लक्ष शुभेच्छा!

Diwali festivities begin on from the 12th day or the Ashwin Krushna Dwadashi, of the Ashwin month of the Marathi calendar while in the rest of the states, Diwali celebrations begin on the 13th day of Ashwin.  This day is celebrated as Vasu-Baras, the Marathi New Year.
